Joe Dougherty joined the CUA coaching staff in the 2015 season, serving as the program’s special teams and defensive back coach. Dougherty was promoted to offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the 2016 season. Dougherty joined CUA from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where he served two seasons as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Dougherty started at Hamilton in 2013, coming off a seven-year stint at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Initially joining the Lafayette program in 2003 as a wide receiver coach, he returned in 2006 to coach the running backs for two seasons and the wide receivers in 2008. Dougherty worked his way to the defensive line position in 2009. In his first season as the defensive line coach he oversaw several All-Patriot League selections. In addition to preparing and executing defensive and special teams plays on the field, Dougherty also monitored the academic progress of his defensive line students-athletes.
Between his years at Lafayette, Dougherty served as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. In the 2004-2005 seasons, he coached three All-Patriot League selections. Dougherty served as a graduate assistant at Rowan University for the 2001-2002 seasons in Glassboro, N.J. As the outside linebackers coach in 2001 and the quarterbacks coach in 2002, he coached several All-NJAC selections, Offensive, and Defensive Players of the Year. He also served as recruiting coordinator for both seasons. Dougherty graduated with a Master of Arts, Higher Education Administration from Rowan University in 2002. Dougherty began his coaching career at Bishop Hafey High School in Hazelton, Pa., serving as the offensive coordinator in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. A 1999 graduate of Dickinson College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in psychology, Dougherty currently resides in Washington, D.C.
